Tips for giving your young artist feedback that inspires, encourages, and feels genuine.
“Mom, Is My Drawing Good?”
When your child holds up their masterpiece and waits for your response, it can feel like a big moment—and it is! Giving the right kind of feedback can make all the difference in nurturing their confidence and love for art. So, how do you encourage their creativity while showing genuine interest?
First, start by taking a good look at their work. Instead of a simple “It’s great!” (though that’s nice too), dive deeper with specific and open-ended questions. Here are a few examples:
- “What’s your favorite part of this drawing?”
- “Why did you choose this setting?”
- “Tell me about the colors you picked!”
- “You must feel so proud of this piece!”
- “What materials did you use to create it?”
Kids have an amazing ability to sense when feedback is genuine. Showing thoughtful curiosity not only boosts their confidence but also helps them reflect on their creative choices.
Art is about expressing what we love and know. By taking the time to connect with your child about their work, you’re fueling that passion and helping them build the confidence to keep creating. After all, their journey as an artist starts with encouragement—and you’re their biggest fan!
