Art Plus Academy is not just a great place to learn how to draw, paint, and use other media. It’s teachers help you learn how to see the world in a different way. I’ve been taking classes there since 2018, and I’m really happy with the progress I’ve made. My artwork is just getting better and better. You can’t go wrong with the teachers here and the community and friends you will build and make with other students.
If you want to learn to actually “see” as an artist, I recommend this art school for a wonderful learning experience. In the last 3 years I have seen my focus improve, my techniques expand, and my enthusiasm for creating beauty through art grow tremendously. Thank you, Monica Araoz and your excellent teaching staff!
I looked at several schools before settling on Art Plus Academy. The before and after pictures on the website gave me the push I needed to sign up for a class. I took an adult art class with Monica. I saw vast improvements in my sketches in a short time. Monica is an excellent teacher. Her passion for art and teaching comes across in every class. She genuinely cares about her students. When I was having a difficult time with one of the techniques, she sent me materials to look at so that I could improve my skill. She has built a wonderful community of students and teachers. Everyone I have come across has been encouraging, inclusive and friendly. I would highly recommend Art Plus Academy.
I love this school. My teacher, Rosemarie is excellent. She is an excellent artist in her own right but she is able to help each student achieve at their highest level. It is so cool to see a new student come into the classroom without any experience and be taught the basics and soon become an outstanding artist. I’m so proud of my classmates. I have attended 3 other schools. One just showed you a picture then took you one step at a time, showing you exactly what color of paint to use and how to do the painting. So all you were doing was copying someone else’s painting. I won’t say I didn’t learn anything there but I didn’t learn to express myself and do my own work. Each of the other classes had teachers who just ignored me. They had bonded with the other students and so it was kind of a little click and they didn’t want anyone else to join in. Also once the teacher admitted to not having had much experience with acrylic painting so he ignored me and I just had to paint what I wanted to paint. Rose primarily works in watercolors but she is able to teach each student in the class no matter what medium the student wants to work in. If the student is interested in learning about a new medium she does a great job of teaching the new medium. It is a beautiful experience to watch students learn new techniques and skills. I enjoy each class and look forward to the class each week.

Art Programs
for Adults and Seniors
How many adults have you heard say, “I do not have an artistic bone in my body” or “I can’t even draw a straight line”?
Many people stop drawing around 10 years of age, often becoming self-conscious and overly critical of their abilities. As Pablo Picasso famously said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” However, the good news is that drawing is a skill—just like riding a bicycle or playing an instrument—that anyone can learn, and we can teach you (see what you can learn).
Furthermore, our adult classes offer personalized instruction based on each student’s experience and interests. As a result, participants can work on different projects at various skill levels to track their individual progress (see before/after progress gallery).
For students who are beginners
We recommend that beginners start with drawing.
After all, drawing is the foundation for all other media—like learning to walk before you run. It helps students develop observation, coordination, and confidence, which are essential for progressing into painting or more complex projects.
To support this, adult beginners begin with drawing exercises from Dr. Betty Edwards’ “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”, along with additional exercises developed by our team.
The curriculum includes contour, cross-contour, negative space, perspective, understanding of value and basic shading techniques, primarily using pencil and paper. Once these core skills are mastered, students transition to charcoal and soft pastels to deepen their understanding of values and shading.
For experienced students
Before starting, an initial consultation helps determine the student’s current level, interests, and class objectives. From there, a series of tailored projects strengthens existing skills or introduces new mediums. Students can explore charcoal, pencil, watercolor, soft pastels, oil pastels, and acrylics.
