Art Academy SW has been a fantastic experience for our daughter. Her skills and confidence have increased especially in regards to shading, dimension, use of color and different media. Class sizes are small allowing for kids to remain focused and have some individual direction while working on projects. Mr. Matt is an outstanding and engaging instructor!

My son has attended Art+ Academy (North) for several years. He loves the classes and is always excited to start a new art project. He is in Mrs Marlene’s class and loves working with her! He tends to get frustrated by not getting things “perfect” and the supportive atmosphere has helped him embrace imperfection and working hard to develop a new skill.

My daughter really enjoys her art classes here. They are competitively priced, offer year long classes, lots of schedule options, and the teachers are wonderful. I love the makeup class policy too, it really allows you to get the most for your money.

This is my 3rd year to be in Rosemary’s class of adults. I was so excited to come back to class today, after summer vacation. Missed my art buddies! Last year I was doing landscape watercolor, sketching animals in pencil, a lot of landscapes in pen and watercolor in one picture..mixed media. I’m coming back ready to learn and experience whatever class presents. Rosemarie is a fabulous laid back artsy teacher with lots of knowledge and plenty of experience teaching all ages. Another plus is learning in a class with people who are doing different types of art….it is encouraging me to try different types. Come try it!

about your class
Learning how to draw is a great asset for children of this age. Drawing allows them to express themselves, a tool to use when they are bored, a way to express their ideas to others, and a source of joy, confidence, and self-esteem. However, children become very critical of their artwork around ten years old. This is the age when most people stop drawing because they are convinced they can not do it.
In this class we teach children:
- Three-dimensional drawing: Through the review of 12 concepts, the children learn: foreshortening, contour lines, basic perspective, size, and other concepts that help make their drawings look 3D. We teach children this by fostering their imagination to create something they do not physically see.
- Realistic drawing: Using the proven methods of Dr. Betty Edwards, “How to Draw with the Right Side of the Brain,” we teach children “how to see” so they can do a realistic drawing. This part of the class is introduced in intervals along with the 3D drawings.
- Exploring media types: As the children learn basic drawing and progress, we introduce different media like charcoal, soft and oil pastels, watercolors, tempera, and acrylic paints.
