Laurie’s Artistic Journey: From First Steps to Fearless Color
When Laurie first joined ART+Academy, she came in with very basic drawing skills—but also with a strong desire to learn. After just a few weeks of instruction and practice, her self-portrait showed noticeable improvement, motivating her to keep going and push herself further.
One of her biggest breakthroughs came when she completed a graphite portrait of her daughter. It was a big leap in her ability, especially in capturing expression and personality on the page.
Curious to explore more, Laurie began working with watercolors and colored pencils before discovering her favorite medium: acrylic. With this vibrant and versatile paint, she started creating large portraits of her children and other subjects, developing a bold and confident style.
As part of her growth, Laurie went through our color theory classes, and within a few weeks, she was skillfully mixing any color using just primaries, secondaries, black, and white. Her technical ability flourished—and so did her creative confidence.
These days, Laurie rarely needs technical guidance; she’s a self-driven artist who thrives on the camaraderie and inspiration she finds in class. Watching what others create helps spark her next idea—and year after year, she continues coming to ART+Academy, always ready to take on the next challenge.
