When Suchita first joined ART + Academy, she came in with a very basic level of drawing experience—but a real interest in learning. Through her first 20 hours of instruction, she steadily worked through foundational projects, learning how to draw what she sees rather than what she thinks is there. She practiced contour and cross-contour, explored perspective and negative space, and learned how to shade with intention.
One of the most exciting milestones was when she revisited her self-portrait after those first lessons. The progress was clear and meaningful—her proportions, depth, and confidence had all grown. That moment sparked something: she told her teacher she wanted to keep going and start creating portraits of her family in color.
With that goal in mind, her teacher introduced her to soft pastels—a medium perfect for capturing skin tones and expressive detail. At first, it was a new challenge, but once Suchi understood how to work with the pastels, her progress skyrocketed. She began to see with new eyes, translating light, color, and form with greater accuracy and confidence.
The results speak for themselves—her family portraits are full of life, and her growth as an artist has been truly remarkable. Suchita is a wonderful example of what can happen with consistency, the right guidance, and a little patience: anyone can learn to draw, and the journey is always worth it.
